Richard George Clitherow (1909–1984) was the fifth Suffragan Bishop of Stafford.〔The Times, Friday, 7 Mar 1958; pg. 10; Issue 54093; col B "New Suffragan Bishop Of Stafford" Category: Official Appointments and Notices〕 Educated at Dulwich College and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge,〔Who was Who 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 he was ordained in 1936 and began his career with a Curacy at Bermondsey.〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 When war came he became a Naval Chaplain.〔During which he was mentioned in Despatches- The Times, Friday, 16 Nov 1984; pg. 18; Issue 61988; col G "The Rt Rev R.G Clitherow" Category: Obituaries〕 From 1946 to 1958 he was Canon Residentiary at Guildford Cathedral before ascending to the Episcopate, a post he held until retirement 18 years later.
